Sunflowers September 2010

Our sunflowers finally popped! I will have to remember next year to plant them a little earlier. Luckily it’s still so hot here now. I really love sunflowers because not only are they pretty, the seeds are good to eat. And I save seeds for the next year too.

We just got back from Cincinnati, where we went to visit my dad in the hospital. He had a heart attack. He is recovering well but it was a scary time there for a minute. When we got back home I was so happy to see my sunflowers! It cheered me up because my dad, like me, loves sunflowers. :)

Did you know that sunflowers are native to the Americas? I didn’t. It is thought they were first domesticated 2600 B.C.

I have eggplant growing in the garden thanks to the new fence Brian made me for Mother’s Day! In prior years I could only grow it on the balcony; the deer and such would eat it up.

Brian made me a fence for the garden! It’s very nice and keeps all the various fauna we have roaming the yard at night. I’m talking deer, raccoons, rabbits, possum, etc. This is a big help!
