Brian is building a big compost bin. We’ll have the current compost ground space for leaf and grass, yard stuff and use this one for kitchen scraps, paper, cardboard. We were having trouble with wild animals like raccoons plowing through the ground pile and spreading garbage everywhere.
We had a nice snow cover this winter, but I did not turn the leaf pile even once since last fall. Thus the leaves are still not compost, or even half done. Well the bottom layer is ready but still. Going to wet down and commence to turning and stomping.
I have so many volunteer tomato plants growing in the compost still it’s unreal. My son S-bop picked out some and put them in the garden with the other tomato plants. It’s hard to believe that in a month the tomato plants will be as high as the stakes and bearing fruit! I can’t wait, [...]
Compost May 31st 2008Originally uploaded by .Mercury Laid in some compost the other day, still have plenty more! I started composting in earnest in the fall of 2006 after having a lackluster garden. The difference between my 2006 garden and 2007 garden convinced me and I have been composting ever since. This stuff is pure [...]
I’ve seen on various sites people talking about how to compost, and I swear some people act like it is rocket science. It is not that serious. I throw most of our kitchen waste in there; veggie, grain, fruit waste, plate scrapings. You can also put in toilet paper rolls, b&w newspaper (and color if [...]
My yard is full of ants and they were all in my garden. I had no problems but I have heard other gardeners complain that ants affect their harvest. My compost didn’t have ants in it but it had worms and grubs and snails and pill bugs. Since those creatures live in the dirt anyway [...]
I mashed about in the back yard & woods, then decided to turn the big compost pile. Added stuff from to small bins. Inner core steaming! Wow! I didn’t turn my compost at all last winter and it froze. I’m gonna keep turning this winter to have garden compost early spring Really something to see [...]
What is compost? Here’s a good definition from wikipedia that sums it up: Compost is the aerobically decomposed remnants of organic materials (those with plant and animal origins). Compost is used in gardening and agriculture as a soil amendment, and commercially by the landscaping and container nursery industries. It is also used for erosion control, [...]
This was growing in my compost! I planted a few in my garden. This blog entry written by Trula Breckenridge. Thanks for visiting Family Footprint!
We pulled up all the remaining garden veggies and turned the topsoil a few weeks ago, but I also wanted to lay in a layer of compost and leaves deep in the garden bed, which we finally did this past Sunday. Hit a few slabs of concrete about a foot and a half down. My [...]
