I decided recently to start eating meat again. Why? because I started craving it, something that has never happened in the past 24 years I was a vegetarian…or in my entire life for that matter. It started due to my health issues, I had a miscarriage and then the flu back-to-back. It was a lot of physical stress on my heart (I have a mild heart condition) and emotionally triggered me to overeat on lots of salty foods. I can’t eat a high salt diet to begin with, and on top of already being physically depleted due to the miscarriage and flu my heart just couldn’t take it. I started having high blood pressure issues.
Getting the medical care I needed for that was a real eye opener. It was advised I try a low-salt diet before going on any medication. Well, I was prescribed water pills also to help me get rid of the water I was retaining. In the first week I lost 16 pounds! and my blood pressure was drastically reduced.
So anyway eating low-salt made me crave…I don’t know how to describe it, I felt like my body was wanting the things elemental to a human diet. I wanted lots of fruit and raw veggies, which were already a big part of my diet, lots of grains, and then also meat. Around Thanksgiving I decided to try some turkey. I did and it was great! Since then I have had fish also. I haven’t been craving red meat such as beef or pork but I am not ruling red meat out. I just don’t want to eat any, so I won’t. That may change, and I’m ok with that.
As a family we are still going to eat mostly vegetarian meals, primarily because we like those foods. Our son Scott is still vegetarian, while Todd like myself likes seafood and poultry. We are also going to eat mostly vegetarian because we recognize the impact meat-eating has on the environment. For example, producing a pound of beef uses 145 times more petroleum than producing a pound of potatoes.
